Using a sewing machine can be complex when you don’t know how to do it. However, this weakness and the lack of certain resources should not be allowed to deprive you of taking full advantage of the wonder of sewing. To help you use it better, here are 5 practical tips on using a sewing machine.
Know the sewing machine
It is essential to know the sewing machine before using it. Everyone knows what it is, but this section mainly aims to make known the different parts that compose it. First there is what is called a point selector, a tool that allows you to choose the point or the program. We also distinguish the length and width of stitch. The first indicates the distance between two points, the numbers on the adjustment buttons are expressed in millimeters. The second, on the other hand, represents the movement of the needle from left to right.
To hold the thread by the spool, the sewing machine is equipped with spool holders. Generally, they go in pairs. Right next to them is the reel for making the can. In addition, in a sewing machine, there is a part called thread tension which can help to control the flow of thread which arrives at the needle. For its proper functioning, the machine needs a tight wire.
Regarding the needle and its surroundings, there is a needle bar for supporting the latter and a needle clamp to keep it on the bar. Under the needle plate is housed the hook responsible for forming the useful loop at the point. It can be vertical or horizontal depending on the model. The presser foot is also one of the most important features on a sewing machine. Pressing it keeps the fabric flat and can be lifted to slip or remove the fabric using the presser foot lever.
The choice of the needle and its installation
For sewing work, there are many models of sewing machine needles. They differ from one another according to their size. To choose them, you must refer to the thickness of the fabric you need to work with. The most ordinary sizes and which adapt to the majority of fabrics are 80 and 90. There are, moreover, special needles for fabrics classified as stretchy such as jersey, jeans, leather, quilting.
Almost all of the needles have flat heels which must be directed on the reverse side of the hook. In order not to be mistaken in position, some models are provided with polarizing keys offering the possibility of always placing the needle in the exact direction.
Thread the machine
Before threading the machine, it is essential to ensure that the needle is correctly positioned in the high position. This makes all the elements of the sewing machine visible and discernible. After installing the spool on the spool holder, the end of the thread must be unwound to pass it through the guide. Then you have to descend in order to reach the thread tension. Then, you must go back to the thread tensioner. Once this is done, you must go back down to the needle in order to put the thread in the eye. You finally have to pull the thread to make it exceed a certain end of it (a few centimeters are enough) in order to pass it in the notch of the presser foot.
